The Museum Lukisan Ratna Warta, usually called the Puri Lukisan (the palace of painting), was opened in 1953. Set amongst a restful sculpture garden, this museum contains a magnificent collection of modern Balinese paintings and sculptures, chosen under the disceming eye of the Dutch artist, Rudolf Bonnet (1895-1978) over the years since he first arrived in Bali in 1927. The Museum owes its inspiration to Bonnet and his great friend Cokorda Gde Agung Sukowati (1917-1978). Together they have made a unique.

On the main street of Ubud the Museum Puri Lukisan, Museum of Fine Arts, was established in the mid-50s and displays fine examples of modern Balinese art. It was in Ubud that the modern Balinese art movement started, where artist first began to abandon purely religious and court scenes of everyday life. You enter the museum by crossing a river gully beside the road and wander from building through beautiful gardens with pools, statues and fountains.

It's relatively small museum and has some exxelent art but unfortunately these days the buildingand the gardens are beginning to look rather tired, worn and in need of rejuvenation. Nevertheless this gallery, along with the Museum Neka, is worth looking around before you make any decision about buying art in Ubud. The Museum is open 8 am to 4 pm daily and admission is 10.000rp.
